Saints & Stars | Amsterdam

So I know most of you don't come here for sports-related content (carbs over burpees amiright?), but I enjoyed reviewing some of my favorite workouts in New York, so I'm thinking of continuing and doing the same in Amsterdam! So what better place to kick off my Amsterdam-workout-content than the newest kid in town: Saints & Stars. With ads that remind me of Equinox and boxing bags that resemble those of Rumble, I was very curious to try this boutique gym which just opened last week. I tried both the classes they offer to give you a full-on review of Saints & Stars.

When you enter the gym it feels like you've just entered the lobby of a cool new hotel. These guys have visibly put a lot of effort into making this place look incredible, and I must say it even looks better than a lot of similar boutique gyms I've been to in New York. I didn't take pictures of the entrance because it's always pretty crowded before/after classes but you can see more pro-pics here

The staff is a mix of Dutchies and expats, and they're all extremely accommodating and helpful, especially considering the fact that these first few weeks must be pretty overwhelming for them. So extra points for good service!

At Saints & Stars there are two rooms and two different types of 50-minute workouts you can do: Holy Box and Holy Shred. Sound good right? It is. At 1000-calories a pop these classes are no joke. You'll sweat, you'll burn, you might even scream. But in the end, you'll love it.

So the Holy Shred is a mix of interval training and body conditioning/strength. You alternate between the treadmill and the weight area. You start off gently with running and body weight exercises, and it builds up to fast sprint intervals and weighted exercises. Your muscles will definitely burn and I found it challenging, but it felt so good after (but not the days after, ahh the soreness). If I could compare it to any other workout, I'd say this comes close to Barry's Bootcamp. The Holy Shred follows a weekly schedule where Monday is leg day, Tuesday upper body etc.

Workout numéro dos is the Holy Box. This is actually the one I was most excited to try, considering my love for boxing. This is a full-body workout which combines boxing, cardio, and strength. With a partner, you alternate between the bags and the floor, where you do a mix of full-body strength exercises, also using weights. You can basically make it as intense as you want. I was dripping with sweat at the end, which felt great. I must say that the boxing part is not technical at all so it's good for beginners but at the same time, this is not the place to learn proper boxing (unless you take personal training sessions). It's very much Rumble inspired and I'm glad that someone finally picked it up outside of New York!

What I loved the most maybe is the look of this room, the design is so cool and I love the disco vibes when the rainbow lights come on!

I had Roberto as a trainer both times so I can't say much about the trainers overall, but he's a great instructor and explains everything very clearly in both Dutch and English (and is slightly intimidating, but that's what you want in a fitness instructor).

Like the rest of the gym, the changing rooms are beautiful, spa-like and well-equipped (hairdryers, towels, Malin+Goetz products, free lockers etc.) Very pleasant.

There's also a juice/smoothie bar so you can grab a drink after your workout or even order once before your class so it's ready for you when you finish! A very nice touch and good for those who still want to get some protein after the later classes (they have vegan options too).

Overall, I loved my experience so far at Saints & Stars. The look, feel, service and quality of the classes is very high standard. There's no membership, you just buy credits and pay-as-you-go. Pretty simple! For first-timers, there's a deal where you get 3 classes for €20. If you like intense and effective work-outs, it's worth a try. I'll definitely be back for more.
