Bar Centraal | Amsterdam

This place is not that new. It opened about a year ago, so it's still new-ish to me though. Several trusted food sources promised me I'd love this little natural wine bar/restaurant. And I did. I love the simple concept of some good natural wine paired with interesting, delicate yet comforting food, shared with a friend. One of my favorite restaurants in New York (Wildair) did this concept so well, so I needed a new replacement in the Dam.
Enter: Bar Centraal.

It so happened that I tried this restaurant for the first time with one of my dearest but not so nearest. She lives in New York, so I wanted to take her to good places all weekend. We ended the weekend here, which was just perfect. Some wine, some bites, and lots of chatting. One last cozy moment together before we'd part ways again (just another excuse to head back to New York soon).

We started off with some wines recommended by our waiter. Since I don't know that much about natural wines yet, I always just go with whatever I like the most (at most natural wine bars they let you try a couple wines first). I heard they have over 60 different wines here so something for everyone.

We ordered a couple dishes to share from the small menu, which changes weekly.

Starting off with burrata, dried pear, dates and basil. Simple but one of my favorite dishes of the evening.

Bimi and green asparagus with seaweed and oysterleaf. Very good as well, even mopped up all the sauce with some warm sourdough.

Roasted and fermented leek. Although this was good, it wasn't my favorite dish of the evening. I think because I'm not the biggest leek fan.

Kohlrabi with smoked butter, thyme, and cider. My second favorite dish of the night.

Although the dishes were small, they contained a ton of flavor. For a full tasting menu, you pay €30 pp which is very reasonable, but we chose to only share a few dishes since we weren't too hungry. I will be back to try the full menu next time (and in the meantime, I'm swooning over their Instagram stories)

A combo to remember to try at home: burrata, pear, and date pasta. Too good!

Bar Centraal feels like a cozy neighborhood café except it has really fantastic food too. Perfect for a light meal or a full tasting menu on more special occasions (I can imagine that this is the perfect spot for a date night). Because the space is small I wouldn't recommend coming here in big groups. It's rather intimate and cozy! I love this spot and I can't wait to try more of the food here.
