One day in Amsterdam + updated guide

Some of you might know that I lived in Amsterdam in 2014, for four months during summer. I absolutely loved the city and got to know it in a completely different way than before. I firmly believe that people that don't like Amsterdam are people who haven't gotten to know all the good sides of the city. Every time I return to Amsterdam, I get butterflies in my stomach (yes really). So when my sister told me on Friday night that she'd go to Amsterdam the next morning, I told her I'd join. Because how could I resist a little day trip to one of my favorite cities?!

We took the train to Amsterdam because: super convenient. It's a very walkable city (or rather bikable), and from the Central Station, you can walk almost anywhere important* in under 20 minutes.

*important means nice areas to walk around, good food, shopping, sightseeing... :)

De Jordaan / Haarlemmerbuurt / Noordermarkt

We started the day with a walk around the Haarlemmerbuurt, followed by the Noordermarkt, which was and still is my favorite Saturday market in Amsterdam. They sell all kinds of things from clothes to cheese to seasonal vegetables.

One of my favorite shops near the Noordermarkt is Pompon, one of the most beautiful flower shops I know. The company I used to work at in Amsterdam always got their flowers from here and I loved the bouquets that came in weekly!

My sister had seen on Instagram that stylist Nicole Huisman was selling her clothes for a "minimalism" project, of which part of the proceeds would go to charity. We like her style so of course, we had a little look since it was in the area, and we managed to find a couple of nice things for a good price (including these!). Win-win.

The weather was lovely in the morning so we took the opportunity to stroll around the area. Some of my other favorite places in this area are La Perla for pizza, Winkel 43 for the best apple pie of your life, SLA for a healthy and delicious lunch and Vinnies Deli which is a cozy all-day café/eatery.

TOKI

After walking around we went to Toki in the Haarlemmerbuurt, a place I'd been wanting to try for a long time! The guys who work here are Australian/Dutch and they made really good coffee (as all Australians do). They also have all kinds of non-dairy milk, like almond, oat and Bonsoy, which is literally the very best non-dairy milk to put in your coffee. The cakes looked so delicious but since we're trying to eat vegan, we skipped those.

Apart from great coffee, you can also get the perfect Instagram shot at Toki ;) they have beautiful little tortoise spoons and marble benches/tables. I also loved the friendly vibe at this place, it reminded me a lot of my favorite place in Antwerp.

After coffee, it was time to meet up with the other girls and go for lunch! On our way there we passed Raïnaraï, a cozy Algerian place which always has an attractive display of fruits & veggies.

Bo Nam

Several people told us to try Bo Nam, so that's where we headed for lunch. It's Vietnamese food, which I love! We all took a lunch combo, where you get a noodle bowl and spring rolls for €15. In hindsight, this was a mistake because we had way too much food! My sister and I went for an all-vegan meal: the bun cha vegan roll bowl and the vegan spring rolls with tofu and pineapple.  The service was a bit messy and slow but we had good food for a good price! Also, I think this is more of a dinner place since it's quite dark inside so I wouldn't go during the day.

9 Straatjes

After lunch, it started raining so it was time to check out some shops in the 9 Straatjes (several little streets that run parallel where you can find concept stores, vintage shops, restaurants, cafés etc.) Some of my favorites here are Skins, Rika Boutique, Amatør, Fabienne ChapotLove Stories, Marie-Stella-Maris, We Are Labels, Pluk and Marqt

If you walk a little further through the Raamstraat you'll find Juice Brothers, a really good juice spot and HAY on Spuistraat, a cool interior store.

The Dylan Hotel
Two of the girls would stay the night in Amsterdam at the Dylan Hotel, so we joined them when they checked in. I'd never been inside so was surprised at how beautiful it was! I think this is one of the better boutique hotels in Amsterdam, so if you want to have a luxury weekend away, you could check out the Dylan maybe. They also have a couple restaurants and a bar, perfect for a classy night out.

Athenaeum Boekhandel
This bookshop is known to be (one of) the best in Amsterdam, and I always like to pay a visit. I love their cookbook section, but also the magazine section in the building next door is worth a snoop! Great if you're looking for a gift or something beautiful for on your bedside/coffee table.

De Bijenkorf

The Selfridges of Amsterdam... if you don't find it here I'm not sure you'll find it anywhere. Since they did a make-over on the ground floor I even love this department store more. The handbag and designer sections are amazing! I feel like this is what we're missing in Antwerp. but at least now they've launched a Belgian online store. How cute are Loewe's elephant bags? Still swooning over these!

I spotted my friend's new book in the book section and immediately bought it! I've already finished it and can highly recommend it to anyone who needs a little kick in the butt when it comes to running and motivation. Well done Annemerel :)

Time to go back home. Ahh I didn't want to leave, I love this city so much! Since I know that some people are still using the Amsterdam map I made in 2014, I've updated it a little bit. I can't wait to go back and try some more new spots.
