New York Getaway | The Hamptons & Shelter Island

When my siblings were here a couple weeks ago, we rented a Mustang and left the city for the weekend. I hadn't seen much of the state of New York apart from NYC, so it was time to explore! We left on Friday morning, which would be the only day with sunny weather so we headed to the Hamptons first. In this 'New York Getaway' post I'll go through all the stops we did on the way!

Renting a car in NYC
I thought it would be hard to find a car rental in the middle of the city, but it was super easy. We went to the Avis Car Rental on East 11th Street and got a Mustang. If you order/pay your car on the website it's usually a bit cheaper so we did that and then called to request the specific car (in that price range you could either get a Mustang or a Prius). Easy!

West Hampton Beach

Our first stop was at a random beach in Westhampton. I don't remember the name but it was a really long stretch of beach, very empty and beautiful! I think that the beaches in Westhampton are much less crowded than the ones more north. We looked for shells for a while and then continued our little road trip.

Parrish Art Museum
The next stop was in Water Mill Southampton, to visit the Parrish Art Museum, which was designed by Herzog & De Meuron. The museum focuses on artists from Long Island, and some more famous artists like Jackson Pollock and Willem De Kooning. While I didn't love the collection, I think the building is really interesting and definitely worth a visit.

East Hampton
East Hampton is probably the most beautiful party of the Hamptons, just like what you've seen in Sex & The City, Revenge and Gossip Girl. There are huge mansions, perfectly manicured gardens, the greenest lawns you've ever seen and cute little shops (the light was too bad for good photos so you'll have to use your imagination). While we didn't stop in East Hampton we did drive around Lily Pond Lane and Ocean Avenue. Lucky for us, the cherry blossoms were still blooming here!

Lunch Lobster Roll Restaurant Amagansett

We'd had an early breakfast so by 5 PM we were totally starving. Since lobster rolls seem to be a thing in the Hamptons, we stopped at a lobster place by the road. Turns out we chose a pretty good one, since this place is in all top-1o lobster roll lists in the Hamptons. If you've watched The Affair, you'll recognize this place. My sister and I both went for the hot lobster in butter with crunchy fries while my brother had the soft shell crab with corn on the cob. Very simple food but tasty "fast food"! (ps. skip the milkshakes and coleslaw, not great.)

Montauk / The Light House
With new energy, we continued our trip all the way to the very tip of Long Island, at the Montauk Lighthouse, a national historic landmark which we weren't able to visit because they had already closed. It's the first lighthouse that was built in the state of New York, and it's still being used. There's a little rocky beach on the left side of the lighthouse where there are some scenic views.

Shelter Island

Shelter Island is a little island located between the Eastern and Western forks of Long Island. I've been twice now, to visit friends, and it's by far the best place I've been to on Long Island. You take a 10-minute ferry from Sag Harbor to get here from the Eastern side and a ferry from Greenport to get there from the Western side. You can even go by car on the ferry!

Shelter Island is a small island of 30 square kilometeres, of which about one-third is a protected nature reserve. Much like the Hamptons, New Yorkers come to retreat here during the summer season, when it gets too hot in the city. I drove around here by scooter and it felt like I landed in a classic American movie, everything looks so beautiful and perfect!

Mashomack Preserve
This is the large nature reserve on Shelter Island. You can do long trails here which can take up several hours, but I only had time for a short trail. It's very peaceful, green and calm, it's a perfect contrast with New York City!

Sunset Beach

Sunset Beach is a hotel, restaurant and bar complex on Shelter Island run by famous hotelier André Balazs, which you might know from the Chateau Marmont and Chiltern Firehouse. It's the perfect spot to go to if you're just on Shelter Island for a day. We stopped by for some afternoon rosé and some cheeky french fries and artichoke fries. While it's expensive (to be expected) the atmosphere is really nice because you've got a beach in the front and a party in the back. I can see myself spending a whole day at this place!

Marie Eiffel Market
Marie Eiffel is a little local and organic deli on Shelter Island. They sell everything from freshly baked bread to breakfast, cheeses, fresh fish and salads. It's definitely on the pricey side but considering the fact you're on an island, it's quite normal. We stopped for some bagels, juices and a granola parfait. It's on the way to the ferry, so it's perfect to stock up on some snacks for the road.

After Shelter Island we continued our little weekend trip towards Connecticut. I'll tell you all about it in my next post!
