Five Leaves | New York

I'd heard rumors about an amazing little brunch spot in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. So on a very sunny and warm Sunday, I decided to make the trek over to Brooklyn so I could finally try those famous Five Leaves pancakes. When we arrived, we were told we'd have to wait more than an hour to get a table so we walked around Greenpoint for a while. Was it worth the wait? Find out..

Five Leaves is located on a corner facing McCarren Park, so in case you need to wait (and you will), you can hang out in the park for a while. Just down the street, there's a really nice beer hall called Spritzenhaus serving craft beers. Another good tip to make the wait a little less long ;)

You'll find that there's a crowd of people waiting outside Five Leaves but it's much more fun to just put your name down and go do something else. The waiting time was pretty accurate so I just set a timer and headed back when it was almost our turn.

The place was packed inside, but on a nice day like this, you really want to get one of the tables outside.

The menu is a perfect all-rounder when it comes to brunch: grain bowls, pancakes, oats, avocado toast, ricotta, salads, burgers, sandwiches, granola, oysters & more. We started off with the chopped kale salad and truffle fries. Both delicious, although I wasn't a huge fan of the anchovy dressing in the salad. The fries are a must-order. And it wouldn't be a true New York Sunday brunch without some drinks so we had a Bloody Mary and a grapefruit Margarita. Judging from these two drinks I think every cocktail on the list is a winner!

For the main event I chose the pancakes, even though I was more in the mood for something salty. But I came all the way here for the pancakes, so I had to order them. And I didn't regret it, oh my. These are for sure some of the best pancakes I've had in my life! My favorite pancakes are at Granger & Co. in London but these definitely deserve second place. A fluffy stack with berries, banana (a whole banana was a little excessive though) and honeycomb maple butter. And if it's not sweet enough, there's a little jug of maple syrup. I kind of struggled finishing this so I wouldn't recommend eating something before unless you're sharing the pancakes (which is a good idea).

So far, this was one of the best brunches I've tried in New York. And I've tried many. It's a bit of a hassle to go to Greenpoint just for brunch, but in this case, it's 100% worth it. Try to go early-ish (they open at 8AM) so you don't need to wait too long. And go hungry, I'm pretty sure that everything on the menu is delicious!
