Edson Hill | Stowe Vermont

Spending Spring Break in Stowe, Vermont was quite dreamy. Despite the coldest temperatures I've ever experienced, waking up to the beauty of snowy Vermont with a crackling fireplace at my feet made me forget the cold for just a moment. We stayed at Edson Hill for a week, and I don't think we could have possibly have chosen a better home to stay at during our first skiing experience in the U.S. In this post I'll tell you all about this little gem in Stowe.

Location
Edson Hill is located in the charming town of Stowe, just a 10-minute drive from the center of town and a 10-minute drive from the mountain skiing resort, actually right in between the two. Edson Hill is - logically - located up a hill, which provides beautiful scenic views everytime you drive up. The hotel itself is located on a private property so it's really peaceful and quiet.

The Manor
The hotel is made up of the main house (the Manor) and a few chalets scattered on the property. There are rooms inside the manor but we stayed in a chalet, which is more private. The nice thing about the manor is that breakfast is served here daily, there's a bar downstairs and a restaurant. And let's not forget about the living room with fireplace, which is perfect if you want to play a game of Scrabble or read the newspaper. I did find that there was kind of a draft in the living room because it's kind of a passage from the hallway to the dining room, but if you sit close enough to the fireplace you hardly notice it.

Our chalet
There are two chalets which are located a little higher on the property (which gives amazing views), one of which we stayed in. Each chalet comprises three rooms, and our home for the week was room 16. We had two double beds, two comfy couches, a lovely fireplace which we used all the time, and a nice bathroom with shower and heated floor. We had everything we needed and I loved the beds especially, super comfortable!

Upon arrival, we encountered a little problem: not enough storage space. With four people staying in the room, there wasn't enough space for our suitcases and all of our clothes. This is why I didn't take any pictures of the room because it looked messy right away with piles of clothes everywhere.

What I loved most was coming home here after a long cold day of skiing, lighting the fireplace and taking a long hot shower. We chilled here a lot of the time, and my jetlagged family took a lot of naps ;) The amazing thing was the view we woke up to every morning. I slept right next to the window and waking up to that view was the best start to my day.

Breakfast
Because we would be skiing every day, we had breakfast at the Manor every morning. Breakfast is served daily from 8-10 AM in the dining room, and our favorite spot was the little nook in the corner, overlooking the winter wonderland. We started our mornings with coffee (we had to buy our own almond milk since they only provided cow's milk) and some fruit and local apple juice from the buffet. There are also cakes and pastries, but we skipped those most of the time. I loved the banana bread, though!

There are a few breakfast options you can choose from. You can either go for a sweet breakfast with homemade pancakes, waffles or french toast (all served with local Vermont maple syrup) or go for the savory option with scrambled eggs, baked potatoes, veggies, and bacon. You can also have toasted brioche with jam/honey/peanut butter/butter on the side. On some days we also asked to have oatmeal, even though it wasn't on the "menu".

I usually had the sweet option which was always delicious (apart from the French toast). After a few days, we had all found our breakfast favorites which made it easier to order. However, we did find that the kitchen was very inconsistent. Some days, the breakfast was perfect, tasteful and just enough. Other days, the food would be quite unappetising, way too much and not prepared with care. We're not sure what was going on in the kitchen but this inconsistency really surprised us some days.

The Dining Room at Edson Hill
Inside the Manor there's a bar (The Tavern) and the dining room turns into a restaurant from Tuesdays to Saturdays (aptly named The Dining Room). We ate at the restaurant twice during our day. It's quite well known in the area so it was booked up most nights. Again, the kitchen is quite inconsistent because the first night, my sister and I had one of the smallest salads but the next time my dad ordered it, it was huge and really great. But apart from that small glitch, the food we had here the second time was really delicious.

The only downside I found was that there were hardly any vegetarian options as entrees, so I opted for that evening's special: a light fish filet with homemade gnocchi. Delicious. My sister's steak and my dad's duck paté were also a success. I don't know if you really get the best value for money here compared to other places in Stowe, but if you're staying at Edson Hill it's convenient and the food is tasty.

The surroundings
Edson Hill is located on a beautiful property, which is perfect both during winter and summer. There are several walking trails around, of which I did one (but it was hard without snowshoes!) and we visited the horses at the stables a few times. During summer there's a nice little outdoor pool and in winter you can ice skate on the pond. This all really makes Edson Hill feel more like a temporary home rather than a hotel.

Despite a few inconsistencies with the kitchen and housekeeping service, our stay at Edson Hill was absolutely wonderful. Because there's only a small number of rooms, staying here is a very personal and intimate experience. What charmed me the most was our little chalet with the fireplace, the view in the morning and the cozy breakfasts we had every morning. I couldn't have imagined a better way to spend a week with my family after having missed them for two months.

If you're going skiing in Stowe or even if you're road tripping through Vermont I can highly recommend a stay at Edson Hill. It's (probably) the best place in Stowe!
