Moscow's best coffee spots

After two trips to Moscow - one in November last year and one in August this year - it was about time that I wrote about this city. I went to Moscow for the first time in 2008 when I was too young to care about finding the best - and hidden - places in town ;) But during my last two visits I tried my best to discover some really good places. It's hard work but someone's gotta do it. So I did, and I will be telling you about the best museums, restaurants, shops, parks and other hotspots! Here's part one of my Moscow series: Moscow's best coffee places. Moscow's coffee scene has blossomed over the last few years which means there are tons of little places where you can get a great flat white, espresso or cappuccino, whatever floats your boat.

NUDE. coffee & wine bar
This lovely little place is located in one of my favourite area in the city, Patriarshiye Ponds. This area is full of really cool restaurants, bars and cafés, and Nude is one of them. The interior looks like it came straight out of Pinterest, including Cereal and Kinfolk magazines, wild bouquets and tiled floors. This is a great place for brunch or just a quick coffee or matcha latte. The flat white is amazing, but make sure to try the RAF coffee if you're in for something more special. Nude turns into a wine bar at night, which I reckon would be quite cosy too!

LES coffee (ЛЕС)
When looking up Moscow's best coffee places, LES was a name which came up quite frequently. I actually had a hard time finding this spot on maps, so I kind of gave up. Until I accidentally found it after visiting the Museum of Moscow next door. Score! LES indeed served up one of the best flat whites I had in Moscow, so you can't miss this one as a coffee lover. They have a really cosy all-white courtyard, but you can also sit inside. Also try the homemade banana bread!

Coffeemania
Launched in 2001, Coffeemania has grown incredibly fast in the last few years. You can find more than 20 outlets all over the city, even at the airport. The fun thing is that each one is different, unlike other coffee chains. But they are really consistent in terms of service and quality, so you know what to expect when you're entering a Coffeemania. Their food and drinks menu is one of the most extensive I've ever seen, but I usually come here for the coffee. The flat whites are really good here. My favourite Coffeemania is the one near Lubyanka metro station.

Double B
This one has a similar story as Coffeemania. Double B - which stands for Babushka Batman - started in 2012 and grew rapidly over the years, to more than 20 outlets in both Moscow and St. Petersburg (and even Prague and Kazakhstan!) This didn't do any harm to the quality because the coffee here is really good, and you can clearly taste the expertise of co-founders who are award-winning baristas. Another thing I LOVE is the cute cups they use, I love it when the coffee is served in special cups :)

Friends Forever Cafe
This café is a little more girly than the others, it's stylish and it has lots of delicious cakes and special coffees on the menu. I had a refreshing lemonade and tried the cinnabon latte, which is a dream for any cinnamon lover. It's served with a little cloud of cinnamon-y goodness, and a cinnamon cookie. Yum! Friends Forever a nice place if you feel like having a treat.

More coffee places to try: Cooperative Chernyi, Camera obscura, One teaspoon cafe, Conversation Coffee,
Caffe Del Parco, Nook Coffee, West 4.

My favourites from this list are Nude and LES. I also love that all these places serve soy milk or other alternatives to cows milk, which is often not the case in Belgium. Also, nearly every place serves flat whites, my favourite coffee drink (espresso with microfoam). I can't wait to try more coffee places next time!
