Moscow Food Guide

It's time for part two of my Moscow series (check part one here). In this post, I'll tell you about some great restaurants in Moscow, ranging from super cheap fast food to one of Moscow's best restaurants. I'll share with you some breakfast, lunch, healthy food, fast food, fine dining, Russian food and comfort food spots. This is a collection of restaurants from two trips, one in November last year and the most recent one in August this year. There are tonnes of really good places in Moscow so these are only a couple... I already can't wait to go back and try some more.

Little disclaimer: although I always try my best to have really good quality photos on my blog, I didn't manage to bring my DSLR camera to every single restaurant. So some photos are in average iPhone quality but I hope it doesn't reflect badly on my recommendations because I can really highly recommend every single one of these places!

NUDE. coffee & wine bar

I already told you about this place in the "Moscow's best coffee spots" post, but next to good coffee they also serve some damn tasty breakfast options. They have all the classics, but with a little twist. I like that they've used traditional Russian ingredients such as pickled tomato and this kind of crumbly cheese on the avocado toast.

Tehnikum (Техникум)

I stranded here after looking for a place to hide from the rain. I needed a comforting meal which is exactly what I found at Tehnikum: tagliatelle with chanterelle mushrooms in a creamy sauce. Delicious! The young staff is super friendly, and if you pick the right table you can watch the chefs at work in the open kitchen. I really liked the design details such as marble gold lined tables and the very stylish bathroom floor. I just read that this is run by the same restaurateur as White Rabbit (I'll tell you about this gem later in this post), so I'm not surprised that the food was so good here. A perfect spot for casual dining in the centre of Moscow.

Fresh
I had high expectations for Fresh since it's rated as one of the best vegetarian/vegan places in Moscow. I ordered a salad with mushrooms, spinach, pumpkin, lingonberries, magic tofu cubes and peanut sauce. A very unexpected combination which somehow works really well! The negative: very slow and unhelpful staff and a pretty "cold" interior. I wasn't really feeling the whole vibe, which is a pity. There's also a Fresh ice cream stand in Gorky Park with vegan ice cream. I agree with their tagline "Healthy is the new sexy" but then why is this place not very sexy? I'll give it another try next time, their menu is absolutely huge and I liked the food so I'd love to try some other dishes.

Strelka Bar
Strelka Bar is located on the Moskva River, right across one of Moscow's most impressive landmarks: the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. Just walk over the Patriarshy pedestrian bridge and you'll find Strelka on the right-hand side. We were so lucky with the weather so we got to sit on the terrace, with one of the best views in Moscow. I had a delicious salad, which might be the most beautiful salad I've ever eaten. The menu is big and there's something for everyone's taste, they even cater to vegans. I can image this place would be really great for a sunset drink on a hot summer's day. One of my favourites!

Coffeemania
I've also told you about Coffeemania in this post, but I wanted to tell you a bit more about the food. This is not only a good place for coffee, but it's also a great all-day-restaurant. The food options are endless and they even have a whole menu dedicated to healthier options, including greens juice, zucchini noodles and almond milk matcha latte. I must add that the portions are pretty small, but maybe that's because we both had something from the "healthy" menu.

Café Pushkin
This 24hr restaurant is somewhat of an institution in Moscow. The interior of this place may look like it's old, but actually, everything is new and replicates an 1825 Russian aristocrat's home. The menu contains all the Russian classics like borscht, blinis with caviar, sturgeon and pelmeni. I tried the salmon pelmeni which was really delicious, with a chanterelle sauce on the side and some pickled vegetables. It feels like you've gone back in time when having dinner here, which makes it a very special experience.

Noodles & Ducks at the Mandarin (
Мандарин. Лапша и утки)

This restaurant is part of the Mandarin hotel and is mainly focused around Chinese duck and noodle dishes. There are about 50 different kinds of noodles and 30 different duck preparations. But also as a vegetarian, you can perfectly find some tasty dishes here. I had a delicious dish with different kinds of mushrooms and their famous sticky aubergine with clementines. Very interesting flavours and unlike any other Asian restaurant I've been to. The restaurant's interior is very special and quite fun, there's even a ping pong dinner table for the fanatics.

White Rabbit
This restaurant is special because it's ranked no. 18 in the World's Best 50 Restaurants list. That's probably the last thing you would think when entering - through a shopping mall - the very kitsch Alice in Wonderland themed restaurant. Request a table on the terrace and take in the gorgeous view of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Since we were having a very late dinner, I chose two salads (there are a few veggie options on the menu): the 'Slippery Jack mushrooms, rough boletus, potatoes, salted cucumbers and green peas' salad and the 'Zucchini carpaccio with truffle and parmesan'. I was particularly pleased with the second dish; such a creative alternative to beef carpaccio, very fresh and really tasty. I have actually recreated it several times at home already. I also had the Rabbit Hole cocktail which is possibly one of the best cocktails I've ever tasted. This was my favourite restaurant experience in Moscow; the combination of the delicious food, hot summer weather, full moon and view over the city made it truly unforgettable.

Valenok
This is a huge and very popular Novikov-group restaurant, especially for young people. There's a big outdoor terrace and inside there are two floors. It's a little bit chaotic with a lot of staff running around and a big kid's playing area, so I'd recommend coming here with a bigger group and sit upstairs or on the terrace. I had a very tasty (vegan) bulgur salad and a berry lemonade. The food is not that special but the quality is good.

Kroshka Kartoshka

Last but not least, I just had to include Kroshka Kartoshka ("Little Potato"), which is a typical Russian fast food chain. Their speciality is oven-baked potatoes wrapped in tin foil which are super soft on the inside. They cut the potato in half, fluff them up with a fork, add some butter, dill and any toppings you like. I usually take sour cream, to keep it simple. Super delicious, cheap, very comforting and not as unhealthy as most fast food. It's the best thing ever when you've been walking around all day and you're starving. There's a few dotted around the city, but I've only been to the one near the Red Square and the one at the airport.

My favourites from this list are White Rabbit, Strelka Bar, Tehnikum and Kroshka. Although Moscow might not be the most vegetarian/vegan-friendly city, I did manage to find vegetarian options most of the time, and sometimes even vegan options. But if you're a fish and meat lover this will be paradise for you ;) The food standard is really high in Moscow so you'll hardly ever have a bad meal. There are many more places I want to try so this won't be the last time you'll be hearing about Moscow restaurants. If you have any more tips for me, please let me know in the comments!
