10 x how to motivate yourself to work out

I haven't really been in a workout-flow lately, and I haven't had much motivation to go to the gym, go for a run or a boxing class. Since I know this happens to everyone sometimes, I thought I'd give you my best tips for finding new motivation! There's a few little tricks I think work quite well, and with these I'll hopefully be back in the flow in no time. I've collected my 10 best tricks for work out motivation, no matter which sport you're into!

1. Plan it
If working out is no longer part of your (almost) daily routine, it's really hard to dedicate a certain time of the day to it. You will always postpone it and then most likely not end up going. So at the beginning of each week, set the time and days on which you're planning to work out and stick to it (adding it to your to-do list helps too) And remember, it's much easier to make working out part of your daily routine than only doing it once or twice a week!

2. Workout buddy

When you find someone who you can work out with, it becomes much harder to skip that work out. Kind of like a work meeting, you can't just skip it! And a workout buddy can also motivate you to do that extra rep or run those extra few kilometers.

3. Endorphins

Have you ever regretted a workout? Most likely not! You know that terrible feeling when you've skipped a work out and you're kind of disappointed with yourself? Instead, before you're even considering skipping a workout, think about how you'll feel afterwards. I've never heard of anyone feeling bad after they've worked out! Endorphins are the best!

4. You do you

Although there's a lot of pressure coming from social media etc., think about why you work out. You're not doing it to please anyone else but yourself! And if you're striving to become a better version of yourself, it's not that hard to find the motivation.

5. Find a sport you like

Are you not motivated to work out because you don't really like the sport you're doing? Try something else! If you're always in the gym, go for a run instead or join a group class. Who knows, you might find something you really enjoy doing.

6. Workout clothes

This is my best tip, and it works 90% of the time for me. If I know I'll be at home all day (like on a Saturday), I'll put on my workout clothes in the morning and do my workout later in the day (good if you're not a morning person). That way, there's one less step to get yourself to work out since you're pretty much ready to go.

7. Social media

While social media is often the blame for girls' insecurities, I think it can also be a great tool for motivation. Follow some accounts that inspire you, and their posts will act as little reminders or encouragements for you to work out as well. Some accounts even have great exercise videos or routines so that way you can try something new as well.

8. Set goals

If there's something you'd like to work on, set a goal. If you're a runner, sign up for a race. If you're into yoga, practice that one pose you haven't mastered yet. If you have a goal, you've got something to work for = motivation

9. Reward yourself

Think of a way to treat yourself after you've completed a workout. This can be small like getting take-out from that kind of expensive healthy deli, watching an episode from your favourite show or treating yourself to a new sports top. It always works ;)

10. No pressure
If you put too much pressure on yourself and see working out as a chore you have to do, it won't be fun. Just think about sports as form of relaxation and not a competition! It's only a tiny part of your day but it makes you feel better, gives you energy and helps you take your mind of work/school.
