Borough Market & Monmouth Coffee

For today's post I wanted to do a little throwback to July 2014. Just finished my bachelors degree in PR, strolling around London taking in every ray of sunshine and showing my sister around the city I had fallen hopelessly in love with over the past three years. Though I've explored a bit more of Europe since last summer, London is still my favourite city. After finding these photos I'd never shared on here, I couldn't help but write a little nostalgic post about  a lovely afternoon in London - on the bank side to be precise.
We started the day at London's "beach". I don't think anyone really goes here but it was fun to walk under the bridges and walk along the Thames for once.

Millenium Bridge is one of my favourite places to walk in London, especially on a cold and rainy day it feels like you're in some cool movie (a zombie movie?).

We had enough of our beach adventure and headed up towards the Tate Modern...

...where went to Matisse's Cut Outs exhibition which was incredible but sadly no pictures were allowed. I believe the exhibition now moved over to the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. If you have a chance to see it, do so! It's a fun exhibition to see because you see Matisse at work in several videos. Some works are absolutely huge! This exhibition made us feel all creative, and I felt like cutting shapes and forms in paper.

After the exhibition we felt a bit hungry so the next stop was Borough Market. But not without snooping around at several places along the way...

If you're by the Shard, you're know you're getting closer to the market. The perfect orientation point ;)

If you don't know Borough Market: it's a huge food market (open every day except Sundays) where you can get the freshest produce, but also meat, fish, specialities and street food. It's London most touristy market but that doesn't make it any less good. It's always very busy but if you go early it's not too bad. Borough Market is like heaven for foodies!

When I lived in London (things change fast!), Monmouth was one of the city's best places for coffee. Since I only started drinking coffee when writing my dissertation beginning 2014, I didn't manage to explore the good coffee spots in London but I had buckets of iced coffee when the heat came around in the summer. Before entering the market, we stopped at Monmouth for an icy coffee break.

Monmouth at Borough is always busy so there's a queue but the wait is short.

Inside is where I got told off for taking photos, woops... I always try to show you, my readers, the full experience and atmosphere of a place, so having people in there can't be avoided, but I understand that it isn't always discrete so I forget that some people mind. Oopsie!

Inside there's a small selection of freshly baked good which you can enjoy with your coffee. Since we were about to have lunch at Borough we skipped the sweets and went straight for the iced lattes, which were heavenly in this heat!

Along Borough Market there are tons of restaurants, so if you're not so much into standing while eating the market goods, you can also sit down at one of these places.

After our break it was time to head into the bustling market, where I never know where to look because there's so much amazing produce here. If you're looking for something special, chances are high that you'll find it right here.

Sadly I forgot to take pictures of the best part: Kappacasein's three cheese toastie. Copied by many (even in the Foodhallen in Amsterdam), but none are as good as the original. I don't think a cheese toastie can get any better than this. If you like cheese toasties (I mean.. who doesn't?) you need to try this in your life. Put it on the bucket list. Just make it happen.

Unfortunately no pictures for proof or for you to start craving cheese toasties (check this if you're really curious - drool). With full bellies we continued our day and walked around the market some more.

Borough Market is for sure a place you should visit when you're in London. It's near the Tate Modern, so it's perfect in combination with an exhibition visit. Oh I miss London, this makes me want to go back even more!

ps. if you have a little London trip planned (lucky you!), I've updated my London hotspot guide so it looks like my Amsterdam guide now. Both are up-to-date and my favourite hotspots are on there.
