SLA | Amsterdam

On top of my Amsterdam-to-do list was "eat a salad at SLA". So I fixed a date with one of my housemates and met up with her after work yesterday. SLA has three locations in the city, and we chose to go to the one on the Westerstraat. SLA is basically a really good salad bar, where you can also create your own salads too. The style reminds me a bit of The Good Life eatery in London, sounds good right?

First of all, I love the design of this place. This isn't just a place where you order your salad and want to leave right away. It's cosy enough to sit down and chat for a good few hours. The interior seems a bit Scandinavian inspired, clean and simple.

SLA suggests 5 seasonal salads, but you can also make your very own salad for €8,- which is a bit on the pricey side, though almost all products are organic and locally sourced which makes the price reasonable. (and in London this is around £6.50, which would be considered cheap) All the food here is packed with flavour, no boring salads here!

Downstairs at the salad bar you can order your salad where it's made right in front of you.

This SLA also has a really nice tea bar

Lemon tap water

My salad: lettuce, beetroot, azuki beans with coriander, haricots verts, pumpkin, a dill-mustard dressing and a sprinkle of hemp- and sesame seeds. Really good and so much flavour. I specifically liked the azuki beans, pumpkin and the dressing.

My flatmate had a similar 'base' but chose the red curry dressing, which made the salad taste completely different. I think there are loads of options so you can really make the salad you like.

White painted brick wall with hanging plants, a nice green touch to the whole interior.

Some cookbooks to flick through, I spy some quite new Dutch cookbooks which I must check out!

I love the concept of SLA. It's ultra simple but very good food. I couldn't describe it better than SLA does:
"We know food can be dangerously irresistible. That’s why all you’ll find at SLA are salads, juices, soups and snacks so full of flavor you’d forget they’re hearty and healthy, too. Bringing the best of both worlds, without the frills. We just eat."

I'll definitely be back for more SLA (which means salad for all you non-Dutch-speaking), and I've heard that the raw chocolate cake is to die for. Must try! (more info here)
